Labels are currently available in all types of materials and come with a variety of adhesive backings. They can also be ordered in several customized shapes and sizes.
Apart from the basic types of barcodes labels, labels can also be categorized into three main forms: aluminum barcode labels, polyester barcode labels, and ceramic barcode labels.

Designing and applying bar code labels:

When designing and applying bar code labels this list of questions will help you to get idea about your label:
• How long the label will stay on?
• What will the label be exposed to?
• Should the substrate be paper or synthetic?
• Should the adhesive be permanent or temporary?
• Will it be exposed to a cold environment?
• How much data will be encoded?
• Must the label be removable without residue?

Steps to follow:
If you make decision about bar-coding your product then firstly you have to apply for registration to your national article numbering body. It will give you a company code number and a range of product code numbers. This number helps your product to be recognized when they will be scanned.
After getting the barcode number you will need to transfer this information on to your products. With some products it will be possible to print it directly on to the item, but barcode labels are an easy alternative if this isn't possible. The label can then be added securely to the product, and easily removed when necessary.

Barcode label printing:
Computers, scanners and printers are all used in conjunction to design, test and print labels. Sequential numbers or alphabets are provided on the labels so that they can be used to manage inventory.
You can print your labels with the help of a manufacturer or by yourself.

Label manufacturer: They can help you to design and print you required labels. Manufacturers use specialized software to design the labels.

But the rapid improvements in computer printing technologies have made things much easier for people. Nowadays label-tagging jobs are performed using inkjet labels.
In inkjet labels there are used separate ink containing four or six primary colors for tagging while other products use a simple label. Like other tagging label the inkjet labels are used for product identification made in varying shapes. Some products have rectangle and square shaped labels while others can have circular labels. Circular Labels

A circular label is a round tag on a product package that not only identifies the contents of the package but also serves as an advertising medium. For example, the label on a food package usually has an appetizing photograph of the product, shows the brand name and/or logo, and has various flags, bursts, or other graphic designs highlighting its benefits-for example, "new great taste," "low in calories," "microwave to table," and so forth.

A cent of coupon is sometimes included on labels as are recipes and other suggestions that encourage greater consumption. Circular labels have many uses such as product identification, name tags, advertising, warnings, and other communication. Special types of circular labels called digital labels can also have special applications such as RFID tags, security printing, and sandwich process labels.

Adhesive types of circular labels:
The adhesive circular labels can also be varied. For example, full adhesion can be
Permanent - Typically not designed to be removed without tearing the stock, damaging the surface, or nearly instant, or the circular label can be almost removable for a short period with full adhesion developing in minutes or hours.

Peelable - It is fairly strong and will not fall off in normal circumstances, but the label can be removed relatively easily without tearing the base stock or leaving adhesive behind on the old surface. The adhesive is usually strong enough to be applied again elsewhere. This type is frequently known as 'removable'.

Ultra-peel able – It is designed principally for use on book covers and glass, when removed these circular labels do not leave any residue whatsoever. It is weak and only suitable for light duty applications. Normally these labels have very little adhesion to anything once they've been removed.

Freezer or Frost fix - Most permanent and peel-able circular labels have a service temperature limit and are suitable for deep freeze use.

High Tack - A type of permanent label that exhibits a high initial grab to the application surfaces, and is commonly used at higher coat weights to enable labels to adhere strongly to difficult, rough or dirty surfaces

Static Cling - This is not actually an adhesive at all. The material has a static charge to enable its adhesion to flat, smooth surfaces such as glass. It is not sticky as such and is commonly used for window advertising, window decorations, oil change labels, etc.

Stock types of circular labels:
Label stocks can be a wide variety of papers, films, fabric, foils, etc.

Puffy – This is water, gel, foam, or air-filled create a soft, raised sticker.

Litho – It is one of the most common base stocks

Latex - A litho stock with some added latex allows the label to be much more flexible and form around certain curved objects more easily than standard litho.

Foil - It has the shiny properties of a metal foil.

Thermal - The direct thermal label stock will change color when heated. A heating element in the shape of letters or images can be used to create an image on the label. Custom labels can be easily be made on location in this way. A disadvantage is durability, because another heat source can ruin or obscure the image, or it may fade completely over time.

Thermal Transfer for applications that cannot use Thermal label material because of heat source proximity or short label life, a more widely used material is Thermal Transfer label printer. This material has the advantage of a much longer readable life and does not fade with time or heat. Most major manufacturers of Thermal Printers can be used for either Thermal Transfer (TT) or Thermal (DT) labels
The stock type circular labels will affect the types of ink that will print well on them.

Food Labels

Food labels will give you information about the elements of the food and can help you to decide what to choose as part of an overall healthy eating plan.

Food labels provide information about nutrition facts. They also tell you what's in a packaged food (i.e., the ingredients). Some food labels also state which country the food came from, whether the food is organic, and certain health claims.

Information that are given on a label:
Reading food labels seem to be the most effective way to understand the amount and kinds of nutrients that are provided in the item. It lets you make sensible food selections.

The following information will help you to read a food label.

Serving size: The amount of servings stated in the food label refers to the quantity of food people usually consume. It determines the amount of nutrients that enters the body. This means that if you will follow strictly what the serving size is, you will obtain the same amount of nutrients according to the serving size that was given in the label.

Calories, Calories from Fat and Percent Daily Values: This part of a food label provides the calories serving and the calories that come from fat. If you need to know the total number of calories you eat every day or the number of calories that come from fat, this section provides that information. Remember that this part of the label doesn't tell you whether you are eating saturated or unsaturated fat.

On the right side of a food label, you'll see a column that lists percentages. These percentages refer to the percent daily values (%DV). Percent daily values tell you how much of something, whether it's fat, sugar or vitamin A, one serving will give you compared to how much you need for the entire day. It will help you gauge the percentage of a nutrient requirement met by one serving of the product. One way to use this section of the label is when you comparison shop.

Fat, Sugar, Sodium and Carbohydrate: This section of a food label shows the name of a nutrient and the amount of that nutrient provided by one serving of food. You may need to know this information, especially if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or are eating a diet that restricts certain nutrients such as sodium or carbohydrates.

Food labels also include information about how much sugar and protein is in the food. If you are following a low-sugar diet or you're monitoring your protein intake, it's easy to spot how much of those nutrients are contained in one serving.

Vitamins, Minerals and Other Information:
The light purple part of the label lists nutrients, vitamins and minerals in the food and their percent daily values. Try to average 100% DV every day for vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and fiber. Do the opposite with fat, saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol. Try to eat less than 100% DV of these.
