Activate - What does activate mean?

In labelling, this term refers to the action of converting something (such as a substance or molecule) into a reactive form; specifically, it refers to the conversion of an adhesive from a dormant state (e.g. dry) into an active state (e.g. sticky). The term is most commonly used with adhesives that require an additional, external element to change from a dormant to an active state. For example, water sensitive adhesives and heat sensitive adhesives are dry at room temperature and require the addition of water or heat (respectively) to be converted into a useful, sticky state that will allow a label to be applied to a substrate.
