Adherend - What is an adherend?
Definition of ADHEREND:
A substance or surface that is bonded to another substance or surface by means of an adhesive; an adhesive is applied to and bonds to an adherend, which is then bonded to another adherend using the adhesive. The term is sometimes used synonymously with "substrate" but, generally speaking, substrate refers to a surface before it is bonded and adherend is used after it is bonded.
In labelling, therefore, both the substrate and the face material of a label can be referred to as an adherend; the substrate is bonded to a label by an adhesive and the adhesive is applied to (and bonds with) the face material of the label.
