This term refers to the ability of a pressure sensitive label to withstand shear stress shear stress is a type of stress where the external force that acts on an object or surface is parallel to the surface In labelling for example shear stress occurs when a pressure sensitive label is made to slide across the surface onto which it has been applied Holding power therefore is reliant on both the adhesive strength and cohesive strength of the materials used to create a pressure sensitive label both the face material and adhesive must maintain a strong bond with the adjacent surface s and have the internal strength to resist splitting under stress

Adhesion (Ultimate) - What is ultimate adhesion?

Definition of ULTIMATE ADHESION:

Adhesives have two stages; instant adhesion and ultimate adhesion. Ultimate adhesion occurs after the application of an adhesive material, such as a label; following application to a substrate, the bond between an adhesive and an adherend will continue to strengthen until it reaches the maximum strength (or holding power) possible.

A glue gun is used to stick blue ribbon onto white card. The ribbon can be moved for a short time until the glue dries into its ultimate adhesion.
