This term refers both to any paper or other material including films fabrics and foils that can be converted and used to produce the top layer of a basic label construction and to the top layer of a label construction as an entity in itself Face materials may have a coating or coatings applied to alter their finish and to protect the material from damage during storage and end use In a finished construction the face material is bonded to a layer of adhesive and carried on a backing sheet

Distortion - What is distortion?

Definition of DISTORTION:

An undesirable change in the shape or dimensions of a material.

In labelling, the face material can be distorted by a number of factors including changes in the environment, or by being stretched or compressed during manufacturing, printing, or final use.

A set of old photographs; the material shows signs of distortion as the paper has begun to curl.
