As a general term film can simply be used to refer to any thin layer of material thin is a relative term but modern manufacturing techniques are capable of creating layers that are anything from fractions of a nanometre nm 0 000 000 001 metres to several micrometres m 0 000 001 metres In labelling the term is used to refer more specifically to a thin transparent or opaque material manufactured from synthetic polymers e g polyester polyethylene polyolefin vinyl etc and used to create face materials and backing sheets in pressure sensitive labels

Frangible Material - What is a frangible material?

Definition of FRANGIBLE MATERIAL:

A material that is very easily damaged or destroyed.

In labelling, frangible papers and films are used to make thin, delicate face materials for tamper evident labels. These materials have very little internal strength and structural integrity, meaning that if someone attempts to remove a label from a substrate, it will fragment into tiny pieces, which makes it extremely difficult to remove the label in its entirety and provides visual evidence that someone has attempted to tamper with the label (and therefore the item it has been used to protect). Frangible materials are commonly used as security labels and seals to indicate that someone has tried to damage, steal, or open an item without permission.
