Label - What is a label?
Definition of LABEL:
Label can be used as a general term to refer to any item that functions as a means of identification; especially a small piece of material (paper, fabric, plastic, wood, metal, etc) that is attached to an object and provides information about that item. This could be information that defines or describes what that item is (e.g. a title or product name), identifying information (e.g. information unique to a specific item or batch of items, such as a GTIN or batch number), instructions for the use or care of an item, or details concerning its ownership, creation or manufacture, or intended destination.
Labels can be attached to objects in a number of ways and the method of attachment will generally be chosen to suit the intended application and the material(s) used to make the label and the item that is to be labelled. For example, fasteners (such as rivets, nails, screws etc) are used to add metal plates to industrial equipment, wash-care labels are sewn into items of clothing or fabric items, static cling is used to attach labels to extremely smooth surfaces (like glass), threads or ties (made of yarn, twine, ribbon, plastic etc) are used to tie tag labels onto items where it would be impossible or undesirable to apply an adhesive label directly onto those items, and adhesives can be used to create a bond between a huge variety of different materials and surfaces.
Perhaps the most common type of label are those made with adhesives; these labels come in a variety of forms (sheet labels, roll labels, fan-fold labels) and are usually made with pressure sensitive adhesives. Pressure sensitive labels (or self-adhesive labels) are constructions made up of (at least) three layers; a face material, a pressure sensitive adhesive, and a backing sheet.
This means that the term label can be used more specifically to refer to the combination of the face material and adhesive of a pressure sensitive construction, which are removed from the backing sheet and applied onto an item or surface.
At Label Planet, we specialise in selling A4 sheets of self-adhesive labels, which can be handwritten or printed using an inkjet printer and/or a laser printer. All of our labels are made with a variety of pressure sensitive adhesives, ranging from permanent adhesives to removable adhesives, along with a few speciality adhesives (e.g. deep freeze adhesive, marine adhesive, opaque adhesive etc).
