Mil - What does mil mean?
Definition of MIL:
A standard unit of measure. A mil is a unit of length measuring one-thousandth of an inch (0.001). 1 mil is equivalent to 0.0254mm or 25.4μm (microns). The mil can also be referred to as thou (derived from the unit being a thousandth of an inch, while mil itself is derived from the Latin for thousandth; millesimus) or point. While any of these terms can be used, mil tends to be used when describing the caliper of materials (with point being a synonym for mil), while thou is used when discussing machined dimensions in engineering and manufacturing.
In labelling, this unit can be used to indicate the caliper (thickness) of sheets of labels and the face and backing materials used to make label products.
