Top Coat - What is a top coat?

Definition of TOP COAT:

A type of coating; a coat that is applied to the top surface of a face material to enhance its appearance by adding a gloss finish or to improve its printability. A top coat can improve the printability of a face material by enhancing its ink receptivity or promoting adhesion between the face material and the inks that are applied during printing. Lacquers and varnishes are commonly used as top coats for face materials.

A web of face material during the manufacturing process; when manufacturing labels, a top coat may be applied to the face material to improve its appearance and printability.
