Our top tips for avoiding the terrifying nightmare of troublesome label templates.
Troublesome Label Templates – TOP TIP No. 1: ALWAYS Do A Test Print First
It doesn’t matter how precise you think your label template is – troublesome labels templates can and will go wrong, usually when you least expect it.
Take just two minutes to do a test print onto paper first and avoid the heartache and misery of a badly printed set of self adhesive labels that have nowhere else to go but straight into the rubbish bin.
HOW TO: Simply place a blank sheet of paper into your printer (using the media bypass tray if it has one). Print your template as you would onto your blank labels. Hold your test print against a sheet of your sticky labels. Hold both up to a light source to check for any misalignment.
Troublesome Label Templates – TOP TIP No. 2: CHECK Your Printer’s Print Settings
Incorrect print settings are the main cause of troublesome label templates. To get the perfect print you must make sure your printer is using the correct size and media settings. Print settings control MANY different factors and can influence the print alignment, quality, and resolution of your printed designs.
HOW TO: Before printing your label templates, go into “Print Settings” / “Printer Properties” / “Printing Preferences” (etc) and confirm your printer is set up as follows:
- The Page Size must be A4.
- There should be no scaling options applied (e.g. less than 100% or any “Fit To…” options); if you have an “Actual Size” option – use it!
- Options such as “Ignore Printer Settings” or “Use Default/Driver Settings” should not be selected.
- Set the media type/weight to a specific “Labels” setting – or “Heavy Paper” as an alternative.
- If you need to print high resolution artwork, make sure your printer’s print resolution is set to a higher setting.
