We often get queries about our label sizes, so here's a guide to everything size-wise at Label Planet.
MEASUREMENTS FIRST:
The first thing to remember is that we list all of our measurements in millimeters (mm) – so whenever you see a description of a label’s size on our website the values will always refer to millimeters.
SIZE MATTERS:
As specialists in labels supplied on A4 sheets, the sizes we can offer are determined by the dimensions of an A4 sheet – 210mm wide by 297mm high – and the sizes that will fit into that space most efficiently – i.e. with as little waste material as possible.
For example, consider our rounded corner rectangle LP8/99 (99.1mm wide by 67.7mm high) and our square cut corner rectangle LP8/105 (105mm wide by 74.2mm high). Both of these sizes are based on having 8 labels per page, but the measurements of the labels themselves are quite different. It is easy to see why the size of the LP8/105 label is what it is – they are made by dividing an A4 sheet into 8 equal rectangles with 2 columns and 4 rows. The width of the sheet (210mm) divided in half is 105mm and the height of the sheet (297mm) divided by four is 74.2(5)mm – so the size of these labels is 105mm x 74.2mm. As the LP8/99 are cut as rounded corner rectangles with both a gap between the labels and a margin around the edge of the sheet, the size of the labels has to be reduced to account for this additional space requirement.
Bespoke sizes will not necessarily fit onto an A4 sheet economically – there may be a great deal of wasted material, which would make them very expensive to supply. Generally speaking, these sizes are much more likely to be available on rolls – either as a standard size available to order from stock or as a bespoke size that is made to order. So, if you need a label that is a slightly unusual shape – such as a very long and thin label or a “credit card” size label – or if you need to be able to work in inches rather than mm, it is probably best to look for suppliers and/or printers of rolls of labels, rather than A4 sheets.
FINDING THE RIGHT SIZE:
We know that size is a very big part of choosing the right label. We recommend using our Label Finder, which lists all of the label sizes we supply.
TRYING A LABEL ON FOR SIZE:
If you’re not sure a label size is right for your purposes, you can always request a sample to test out for yourself.
TIP: FIT THE DESIGN GLASS SLIPPER TO THE LABEL FOOT AND NOT THE LABEL FOOT TO THE DESIGN GLASS SLIPPER
We often get customers who have spent time and money perfecting their label design and all they have left to do is buy the labels. Unfortunately, quite a few of them find that the specific dimensions they have settled on – while they look perfect and absolutely amazing – simply don’t match any of the sizes we offer, meaning that they will either need to compromise on the design or they will have to have bespoke labels made. So, to avoid design headaches and heartaches, we advise customers to measure the area they want a label for, look online for the closest existing match, and then design their label using those dimensions.
