What is the difference between a matt or gloss waterproof finish?

While the main difference is their appearance, there are other benefits to each finish. Gloss is easier to wipe and so stays cleaner. Matt is better for printing barcodes that need to be machine-readable or for labelling surfaces that themselves have a matt finish. Gloss materials do differ so we recommend requesting a sample to check the finish suits your application.

What kinds of waterproof adhesive are available?

We offer two types of waterproof adhesives; permanent and removable. Some of our permanent adhesives are of the marine quality BS5609 standard.

Removable waterproof adhesives are great if you need temporary outdoor waterproof labels; for example, as signage for a short-term event like a sports event, fair, exhibition, or conference.

Permanent waterproof adhesives are used for labels that must not fall off when exposed to water. They are often printed with critical contact or product information, warnings and advice, or instructions for use that must remain in place and legible at all times.

What is the difference between waterproof polyester and other materials?

Polyester is hard, rigid, heat resistant, thin, non-stretchy, and fully waterproof, which makes polyester labels best suited to flat or gently curving smooth surfaces. Our range includes white (matt and gloss), clear (matt and gloss), and silver (matt, mirrored, and void adhesive) polyester materials.

The non-polyester waterproof labels we offer are thicker, more flexible, softer, and deformable, which makes them great for uneven surfaces or curved surfaces. The MWPE in particular is extremely sticky and waterproof. These materials are not heat resistant.

What is the difference between waterproof and splashproof?

We include here two products that are splashproof labels rather than waterproof labels. They are both paper products with a gloss finish that can be wiped clean but they are not fully waterproof. They offer a lower cost alternative to the fully waterproof plastic labels.

Splashproof labels cannot be used when labels need to be immersed in water or for long term applications. This is because water will leach in from the sides and discolour the gloss paper.

Printing Waterproof Labels – the most important things to consider.

The basics of printing waterproof labels

[1] Set your printer to use the “Labels” print setting.

[2] Use the media bypass tray of your printer, not the main paper tray.

[3] Before loading your labels into your printer, fan the sheets out to remove traces of static.

[4] Make sure your printer and software are set to use an A4 page size.

[5] If you have an A3 printer, print your labels in portrait format not landscape.

Printing waterproof labels with a laser printer

We recommend using a laser printer because laser printers use heat to bond toner onto surfaces, which produces completely waterproof print.

This means that we are able to offer a wide range of laser printable waterproof labels that are perfect when water resistance is needed.

Printing waterproof inkjet labels

Most inks used in inkjet printers are water-based, which means that any print you add will smudge in water. If print quality is important and your labels will be used outdoors or on items that may get wet (for example, bathroom products), we recommend laser printing.

 We supply one range of fully waterproof inkjet labels. MWPP labels are supplied on A4 sheets of matt white polypropylene with a permanent waterproof adhesive and are suitable for inkjet printing.

The polypropylene has a special top coating that allows ink to dry more efficiently on the labels. It fixes the inks in place while also acting as a protective barrier for your print.

Please note that this material is not compatible with all inkjet printer models / ink cartridges. For this reason, we require customers to request a free sample of MWPP to test with their printer / inks before placing their first order for MWPP.
